You know, I kind of feel sorry for Obama sometimes. Yeah, yeah, I know. He is the most powerful man on the planet and he is doing a bunch of things that will make the US weaker. But still, I can’t get to hate the guy.
His State of the Union address is a good example. I do believe that he tried as hard as he possibly can to accommodate Republicans and conservatives in general. I will go further and say that some of the things he said there are concessions. If nothing else, Obama at least seems to understand how conservative the majority of Americans really are.
But still, he is who he is. He truly believes that government is wiser than private firms. He truly believes that private firms are actually evil if not controlled by government. He also believes that rich people have a moral obligation to pay as much taxes as possible. Those principles will not change and I think it is naive to even expect otherwise. That is why I will never vote for him and that is why he is a Democrat.
Still…. I couldn’t help myself and enjoy large chunks of the SOTU. Can you imagine the huge controversy that it would be if a white Republican president said “We need to teach our kids that it’s not just the winner of the Super Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the science fair”?
And how about all that American exceptionalism? I could actually hear Barney Freaky Frank scream when he said that no one in that room would rather be in any other country in the whole world. I have used that line before Mr. President!
Anyway, I thought the speech was much better than what I anticipated. Maybe my expectations were too low, I don’t know. At the end, I was at least happy to see that Obama is not Carter. He understands that he has to at least try to control his liberal instincts.
Let’s hope he succeeds.
