Most people assume that my main problem with the news media is the fact that they have a liberal bias. But that is only part of the problem.
The real problem is that the news media has become a political tool. And because of that, they have turned into what I call a “disaster advertisement” business. The reason for this strategy is clear: you can only elect whoever you want to a government position if you frame challenges in the correct way.
So that is why you see the same hyperbolic vitriol on MSNBC and Fox News. The only difference between them is the side they are faking. Take this oil spill for instance. Neither side wants to tell you that a phenomena called “natural oil seeps” exist. How much they impact the current debate on this crisis is up to debate but the undeniable fact is that it does. That is not what the media wants. All they want to do is to blame BP (MSNBC) or Obama (Fox News). Same exact thing happens in all ‘crisis’ (swine flu, hurricanes, economy, etc). It is all about scaring you into voting for someone.
Now, they can only do this because there is a legitimate (and important) need for us to have a media that works as an early warning system for disasters. So in the end of the day, there is no way to regulate or shame these people into changing their ways (even though some might say that the current decline of the news business is at least partially a way to do just that).
All we can do as citizens is to be aware of this horrible system and use our own common sense to take every single thing we are told with a BIG grain of salt.
