Interesting article on some good news around what we used to call the war on terror.
By the way, isn’t this a funny world? The US has won the war in Iraq. There is no other way to say this. And yet, because we don’t have generals sitting in a aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf signing fancy documents, nobody really seems to acknowledge that. Search for Iraq news today. There aren’t any.
Why are things like that? I mean, violence didn’t end after WW2. For god sakes we started another big, huge war even after we could remove all the troops from Europe (which are still there, in the hundreds of thousands). And it is not like we still have Saddam Hussein sitting in a palace giving orders to his guys, right? We killed him and many, many others that composed the government that challenged us. Al Qaeda in Iraq has been destroyed, and all the crazy Shiite militias are under control.
You can say whatever you want about the Iraq war. Maybe it was too expensive, based on false premises and mismanaged for way too long. But in the end, this is one war we put under the W column. And if nothing else, that has a HUGE impact on the way the enemies of the US see our country.
So now we need to see if Obama deliver the goods in Afghanistan. By all means, that war there should be easier to win than Iraq’s. There is no concern around legitimacy, it’s a less populous country, we have the support (albeit feeble as always) from Europe and there are no huge ethnitic civil wars lurking in the background. It is just a matter of sending more troops, commitming more money and enduring to the end.
Let’s wait and see.
