Here is my comment on Paulie’s post called “The speech”. It says there that “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” and I am really skeptical that it will be published, so here it goes:
“This is all so funny… everybody so happy and proud that the President delivered a speech! As if mountains and oceans would just move because Obama said so! Some hard work there!
The ‘health care reform’ as proposed now is so not specific that I find it even hard to ague against. Do we know how much it will cost? No. Axelrod said that is not a problem because we never know how much wars will cost us either! That’s so comforting (especially when you think that wars at least do end, and this would be costing us and our children until the rest of our days).
Another funny point is when Paulie and all the ‘good hearted’ Democrats say that costs will go down because we will be more efficient. Really? Something like the post office?
I was born in Brazil, where there is a ‘right’ to health care. I would gladly agree to discuss this issue with anyone that had to spend say a year in Brazil and had to get the ‘free’ health care provided there. It is easy for Democrats to say that we should do this because Germany and France do this and that but it is good to remember that there are many other countries that tried this with completely horrible results.
And how about the extra cost for people already insured? Are we really willing to pay hundreds more every year just because 10% of people are not covered? Are we counting those costs when we say that Government efficiency (!) will save the day? Do we really know who and why these people are not covered? Wouldn’t it be much easier for the Government simply to subside the people who really can’t pay for insurance?
Finally, I do think it was rude to yell during his speech but honestly Obama is lying. There is *no way* we will not cover illegal aliens. We already cover them today right? The argument will again be that emergency room visits are more expensive so covering them is the logical thing to do.
Obama and Mr. Krugman are indeed lying because what in the end this plan would do is deeply unpopular. That’s why everyone is so happy about the speech. This is just another marketing gimmick to try to trick people into believing this reform is something different than what really is.”
