Current devastation of the global epidemic?
Deaths: 159 in Mexico, seven confirmed as swine flu and rest suspected. One confirmed in the U.S., a 23-month-old Texas child
Seriously. Some people will say that I am an idiot for not being worried, that if one of those deaths were in my family I would say differently, etc, etc.
What I know is the following:
“Typically, in a year’s normal two flu seasons (one per hemisphere), there are between three and five million cases of severe illness and up to 500,000 deaths worldwide, which by some definitions is a yearly influenza epidemic. Although the incidence of influenza can vary widely between years, approximately 36,000 deaths and more than 200,000 hospitalizations are directly associated with influenza every year in America.”
That is a lot of people dying, and there was no panic or extra billions of dollars being spent before the press started this fear mongering campaign.
My main concern is not even with all the resources and time spent on this. The real problem is the boy who cried wolf effect. If every single little issue becomes the end of the world, when a real threat comes no one will believe it.
