Isn’t it interesting how the left has been dealing with this Georgia vs. Russia war?
I mean, if you read what Matthew Yglesias has been saying about the Russian invasion of Georgia you might think he is actually happy that a Democratic government is being attacked and taken over by a semi-dictatorial leviathan.
Of course I can see the opposite point, which is that Republican hawks have all of the sudden become pacifists just because the aggressor is Russia, but hey, at least it makes some sense to defend countries you are aligned with. Politicians are always sleazy and phony, but at least the basics check: defend your allies – attack your enemies.
But what is the motivation behind this leftist defense of Russia in this case? I mean, Georgia’s move was indeed stupid but what is happening now is clearly a war to conquest territory. There is just no way to rationalize Russia’s current attack simply as payback.
There are only two possible reasons for this leftist approach: one is that they hate so much the current US government that they will cheer and support anyone who goes against it – even if it means doing things much worse than what the US is supposedly doing. The second possibility is that mother Russia still has an ideological appeal to these people. Just like most of the Russian people, they still think the former soviet Republics are part of the USSR ‘heritage’, and that these wars are almost like a civil war type of deal.
In any case, this is just another example of the complete lack of reason infecting most of the current left as far as foreign affairs go.
