The biggest proof to me that “Peace through Strength” is not just a rationalization of war is the ineffectiveness of peaceful movements.
For instance, does anyone think that these poor monks in Burma will actually get the military junta out of there?
Peaceful demonstration only works in countries that are already peaceful. The civil rights movement in the US for instance. And that wasn’t really that peaceful to begin with.
Now I am not saying that I approve civil disobedience. I don’t, and any government that takes it self seriously shouldn’t.
And that of course is the point.
It is funny how peace lovers have a disconnected view of the world. I mean, when Saddam was gassing the Kurds everybody was appalled. Someone has to do something! When the US actually did something, the world was again appalled.
Why do you think Darfur is what it is?
The world love to see monks protesting on the streets. It’s the materialization of the crazy fantasy that things can be changed without violence. “All we are saying is give peace a chance!”
I keep thinking to myself: What if the burmanese government starts executing monks by the dozen. Would then people call for Marines?
