Picture this: You are a poor black kid. You got the whole package: Mom is 16, Dad is 17; you live in a financially depressed and crime-ridden public housing project which you share with other 3 siblings. Life has handled you a bad hand my friend.
However, your parents keep working and send you to school. Ah, there is also something else: you were born with great athletic talent. You end up being not only the first to finish high school in your family – you get a college football scholarship. You play great, no serious injuries; you don’t even need to finish college to go to the pros. First pick in the first round of the NFL, a 21 year old star with millions of dollars in his pocket.
Lucky bastard, right?
That is Michael Vick, who now may have to spend some years of his life in jail (which would probably finish his career) because he was organizing and betting on dog fighting with his buddies. That included taking the dogs who lost fights in the woods and hanging them; the ones that didn’t die right away were later drowned.
I bet you a million dollars that many fans (maybe some still at the project) must be thinking that Vick is just an unlucky guy. Or maybe that’s all the white lords keeping the back men down.
Maybe Vick will be lucky and get a light sentence.
